Learning Division

Good morning, class! Today, we are going to practice our division facts using some worksheets from Teaching Squared.

Please take out your pencils and the worksheet I handed out to you. This worksheet focuses on dividing single-digit numbers by other single-digit numbers.

Before we start, let’s review the steps for dividing numbers. First, we need to set up the problem with the dividend (the number being divided) on top and the divisor (the number dividing the dividend) on the bottom. Then, we need to see how many times the divisor goes into the first digit of the dividend. We write that number above the digit and multiply it by the divisor. We subtract that product from the first digit and bring down the next digit of the dividend. We repeat these steps until we have no more digits to bring down, and then we have our answer, or quotient.

Now, let’s work through the first problem together. The first problem is 21 ÷ 7. Let’s set up the problem with 21 on top and 7 on the bottom. How many times does 7 go into 2? It doesn’t, so we need to bring down the next digit, which is 1. How many times does 7 go into 21? 3 times. We write 3 above the 1 and multiply 3 by 7, which is 21. We subtract 21 from 21, and we have 0. Our answer, or quotient, is 3.
